I taken Pictures in the last couple of months – please tell me what they tell you:
Back in November I made my first-ever trip to New York City with Sarah for WordCamp New York 2009. I’ve been backed up on my photo workflow, but am gradually catching up. Here are my New York photos at long last.
I’m trying to move away from Flickr towards something I can control. I’m also experimenting with the include parameter of WordPress’ shortcode to pull in photos that aren’t actually attached to this post.
e.g.
The White House Flickr feed never fails to disappoint! This batch of photos might be our favorite yet, with pics of the Obamas getting down at the Governors Ball, some friendly First and Second family basketball rivalry, a drum line in the White House's Cross Hall and a shot of Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag's hipster boots. Take a look and let us know which image is your favorite:

The head of Major League Soccer claimed that David Beckham will return to play in the USA after the World Cup finals in South Africa this summer.
Don Garber, commissioner of MLS, said Beckham's move to the Los Angeles Galaxy has been strongly successful and that opposite to some reports the England star would return to the USA.
“David Beckham will be back after the World Cup, no doubt about that.”, Garber said
“He has been a success. There are always going to be people, particularly in England, that look at everything and don't see the positives.
“Our league is on the map globally, he's one of the most popular people on the planet and he plays in Major League Soccer for Los Angeles Galaxy.
“That in itself has shown the world we are serious in that we have one of the great international players is in our league.
“Football is a phenomenon in the United States now.”, added Garber
The MLS representative is hoping that the Beckham factor will increase interest in England's opening match of the South Africa's World Cup against the USA.
He added: “I think it's important that England has a good World Cup – except for the first match!
“It will be one of the most popular sports events in America for quite some time. ESPN is going to promote it more than any other event in their history, it's a rematch of the 1950 World Cup match which we surprisingly won.
“It's Beckham v Landon Donovan (a Galaxy team-mate) and that could be a great story. I hope David Beckham plays and he's certainly been spending a lot of time in Milan to give him the best chance of playing.”
Garber also insists he is certain that the ongoing dispute between the MLS and the players will be resolved. The MLS controls all salaries and movement of players between the 16 clubs and the players are calling for more freedom.
Garber said: “I wouldn't say there are issues. Years ago there was nothing to fight about in MLS, teams were struggling and it was hard to see a bright economic future.
“Now there's more stability – though the league is still running at a deficit – and the players are looking for more money and to have better working conditions.
“We'll get through it, we'll find a system that works for us and the players.”
Victoria Beckham won us over as a cool mom when she let her little boy Cruz dress in whatever he pleased. And boy does the kid switch up from moonlighting as a Power Ranger, break dancer, Spice Boy and his all time fave: Spider-Nan.
But it looks little Becks has some costume competition. Last night, Britney Spears and her back-to-blond locks (seriously, this girl has quite the dye addiction) had a night at the movies with her bodyguards and Spidey boys, Sean and Jayden.
Posh obviously is the more stylish mom, but who's the cuter superhero kid? Vote in the poll below, and then head over to mystyle's Fashionable Families gallery to see more adorable celebrity spawn.

Canon VIXIA HFS100 Camcorder Review

Review based on a production Canon Digital SD850 IS
The Canon Company is one of the leading manufacturers of digital photography in the global market. The have a lot of digital cameras to their credit and have been consistent in the production of functional and well performing digital camera over time. The introduction of the Canon digital SD850 IS has made their credibility and technicality apparent in a device. It is known that the SD850 is a continuation of the Power-shot SD700 IS. The camera is equipped with a sensor records 8MP images and has screen of 2.5 inch with a resolution of 230,000 pixels. This camera has features that include 16 shooting modes, Widescreen (16:9) stills recording and many more.
Design and Handling
The SD 850 is equipped with a dimension of 90 x 57 x 26 mm and has a weight of 165 grams. This is considerably portable when compare with the Olympus E-420 that has a weight of 465 grams. The device front is made up of quality mental while the rear of it is equipped with plastic. The button are adequately position in such a way that it would not wear away easily. The SD 850 IS features some external control which includes focus, flash, self-timer/drive and sensor sensitivity. By means of the FUNC menu a photographer could accessed the print button, which when it is punch twice it act as the Auto ISO.
Handling
The weight of the device has made it possible for a procurer not to feel the absent of the grip. It is possible for a photographer to hold the device with a single hand with the help of adequate position shutter release and zoom rocker.
Key body elements
On the top right curve of the SD 850 IS the main mode dial is positioned. Play, rec-auto, scene, rec-auto and movie are the five in which the main mode dial is placed.
The screen dimension of the device is similar to that of the SD700 digital camera. It is equipped with an LCD monitor of 2.5 inch and has a resolution of 230, 000 pixels, which shows images or portrait clear. One good thing about this screen is that it is not prone to scratch or a photographer's fingerprint.
When a photographer uses the zoom from wide to tele the aperture minimize from F2.8 to F5.5. Another similarity between the SD700 and that SD850 digital camera is the lens. A photographer should note that when the device is deactivated the lens is retracted into the edifice of the camera.
A photographer provides interrupted entrance to the macro, flash, self-time/drive mode through the four-way control, which also is used to navigate the menu mode. The Function menu is use for the exposure recompense. A photographer would have to the 'DISP' button to regulate the sum of detail show on the LCD screen.
Controls & Menus
The device is equipped with a lot of accessories, which include the Auto ISO Shift mode and the Face Detection. The advantage of the Auto ISO shift mode is that in it indicate a blue light on the direct print button if the shutter speed is too slow for a lighting situation at the sensitivity that a photographer has set.
A photographer can use the mode dial when it is turned to “SCN”, to select the pre-programmed scene modes.
A photographer could select his or her favorite portrait background or shutter noise and personalize it from the 'My Camera icon'. Flash sync to the spot AE point and self-timer hindrance can be customize through the Record mode menu. Another good thing about this menu is that the choice for image stabilization.
This is a utility device by the Canon Company; check your local shop for adequate pricing.

Needed a HD camcorder that would replace my dead JVC HD7. The JVC had
better manual controls in terms independent controls of Shutter and
Aperture. Manual Zoom was okay on the HMC40, handling was okay (very
light weight), top handle is removable (but sometimes had to put back
in — screws don't align with socket). The image quality was okay too
(not too saturated compared to the HD7). Auto White Balance is okay,
but not great — just do a manual white balance. The touchscreen is a
nice novelty (has dedicated record/ Zoom/ quick menu/ full menu/ Erase
buttons at bottom of screen), and there are 3 independent USER1,2,3
buttons to customize the camera. It's only 12x zoom.
Converting
AVCHD to DVD MPEG2 is a bit lacking — I get super pixelated results.
On the internet, they recommend a high end encoder because the Adobe
Media Encoder or Vegas Video don't do a good job. The Optical
Stabilizer is Excellent compared to the JVC HD7's terrible stabilizer.
Over a good camera, you just need a fast PC/Mac to do post-processing.
In the CD disc, there is a utility to convert the AVCHD files to HDV,
MPEG2, and Canopus DV codec. Still testing that utility…
I
recommend Class 6 SDHC card to record, although the manual said I can
use Class 4. On a 16GB SDHC card with Highest Quality recording, you
can record up to 1hr 30min. Stock Battery last about 90min. I highly
recommend the extended battery from Panasonic — records up to 7hr with
LCD screen open!
I did not get the XLR adapter, but was
satisfied with the RODE Video Mic connected to the HMC40's miniplug.
Also I like the option to connect to a pair of headphones. Overall a
nice cam for less than $2000. Get this cam if you're starting out or on
a tight budget or just need a second camera.Panasonic AG HMC40, More Reviews!

Best Digital SLR Camera
January 30, 2010 | Tagged digital, powershot, wii | Leave a Comment
The Nikon D40 is perfect for professional photographers. The images are as clear as I've ever seen. The transfer rate is phenomenal. But like everything, this Nikon product has its share of problems. I didn't care for the size of the grip. I didn't like how there's only a 6 megapixel picture. Those are minor quibbles when we're discussing one of the best Nikon products I've ever seen.
Little known facts
Type: The Nikon D40 is a single-lens reflex digital camera
Pixels: 6.1 million pixels
Image: 3008 x 2,000 pixels
ISO: 200 to 1,600
Output: NTSC and or PAL
Storage card: SD memory card and SDHC compliant
Storage system: Compressed NEF; a 12 bit compression; JPEG baseline compliant
Compatible cards: SanDisk 64MB to 4GB, Toshiba 64MB to 4GB, and Lexar 128MB to 2GB
What comes with the Nikon D40: Rechargable battery, quick charger, USB cable, PictureProject software, rubber eyecup, camera strap, and eyepiece cap
Pros
The Nikon D40 SLR has great quality in print transfer
Great price
The size makes the Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera great for durability.
The Nikon D40 is lightweight.
Great LCD display
It's got a 2.5 fps rate!
The built-in editing features, such as the B/W and sepia make the Nikon D40 definitely worth while.
Shutter shuts quick and easy
Battery life is really superior to a lot digital cameras I've seen
Cons
I didn't like how there wasn't a direct button to change the quality settings or even the ISO settings.
I didn't like how small the grip was.
Where's the front command dial?
Auto focus doesn't work too well. There's also no switch for AF or MF. You have to focus with the lens itself. Plus, there's only 3 AF points.
The Nikon D40 6.1 only has 6 Megapixel. This makes a print no bigger than 12 x 18 at 300 dpi.
Even though the Nikon D40 comes with other lenses, the camera doesn't come with any image stability built into it.
All I can say in the end is that the Nikon D40 is a great new camera. Sure, it has some glitches but nothing's perfect.

Panasonic Unveils World's First Integrated Full HD 3D Camcorder at CES 2010
Available In Fall 2010 – Solid-State Recording System Will Offer Highly-Efficient Full HD 3D Video Production
LAS VEGAS, Nev., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Panasonic Corporation (NYSE: PC) will release the world's first* professional, fully-integrated Full HD 3D camcorder in Fall 2010. The company will begin taking orders in April. Engineering samples of the professional Full HD 3D solid-state camcorder will be exhibited at the Panasonic booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, Main Hall, #9405) at the 2010 International CES in Las Vegas, USA, from January 7-10.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100106/NY33307)
This Full HD 3D camcorder will offer the following core benefits:
Easier to Use
Current 3D systems are large-scale setups in which two cameras are fitted to a rig in parallel, or vertically intersect across a half-mirror. Separate recorders are also required. In Panasonic's new Full HD 3D camcorder, the lenses, camera head, and a dual Memory Card recorder are integrated into a single, lightweight body. The camcorder also incorporates stereoscopic adjustment controls making it easier to use and operate.
The twin-lens system adopted in the camcorder's optical section allows the convergence point** to be adjusted. Functions for automatically correcting horizontal and vertical displacement are also provided. Conventional 3D camera systems require these adjustments to be made by means of a PC or an external video processor. This new camcorder, however, will automatically recalibrate without any need for external equipment, allowing immediate 3D image capture.
More Flexible
The solid-state memory file-based recording system offers greater flexibility to produce Full HD 3D videos in more challenging shooting environments. The camcorder is lighter weight and smaller than current 3D rigs, while providing the flexibility of handheld-style shooting. Setup and transportation is simplified, making it ideal for sports, documentary and filmmaking projects.
Solid-State Reliability and Workflow
Right and left Full HD video streams of the twin-lens 3D camcorder can be recorded as files on SDHC/SD Memory Cards, ensuring higher reliability than on other tape, optical disc, HDD or other mechanical-based recording systems. This solid-state, no-moving-parts design will help significantly reduce maintenance costs, and the 3D camcorder will be better able to perform in extreme environments and be more resistant to temperature extremes, shock, and vibration.
And users will enjoy a fast, highly-productive file-based workflow, with instant, random access to recorded content; easy plug-in to both Mac and PC-based platforms; and longer recording capacity.
More Affordable
Using a standardized, fully integrated design, the Full HD 3D camcorder will be offered at a much lower price than traditional 3D rigs. Transportation expenses for this handheld unit will be less and faster setup times reduce labor costs. Using standard, re-recordable SDHC/SD Memory Cards available already everywhere, media costs become almost insignificant.
In addition to a camcorder, Panasonic also plans to offer a professional-quality 3D Full HD LCD monitor for field use as well as a professional HD digital AV mixer for live event production. Panasonic will offer professional production equipment to allow video professionals to efficiently create 3D content, so consumers can enjoy 3D video using Panasonic 3D home theater systems.
Major Specifications (tentative)

I did some searching for the Logitech Blutooth Keyboard for the PS3. I decided since money is tight to go online and look for the best price, and I found a good deal through Amazon.com for a used one for just under $40 shipped to my door.
At the time, amazon.com was also offering a credit card with a $30 credit for your first purchase when signing up for the credit card. So I effectively got this for under $10.
I was a little worried that being a used product that I would have blemishes, but for the price, I could not pass it up.
The keyboard shipped from the company out of California, and I live in Maryland. The product was shipped via USPS, and arrived in 3 days from shipment. I was excited that it got here that early, as I also ordered something from another web page at the same time, shipping UPS and it was not delivered for another two days, even though it was shipping from the same general location.
When I opened the keyboard, I was impressed to see that the keyboard still had the original plastic covering the shinny black finish of the keyboard. The only thing that made it even appear to be used, is the box was slightly damaged, the serial number on the back of the keyboard was crossed out with black permanent marker, and there where no batteries included.
I added the two double A batteries that where required to use the keyboard. I turned my PS3 on, went into the system controls, searched for the new blutooth device, it required me to type a key code that was presented on the screen on the keyboard to sync it with the PS3. It was easy, set-up and working without a problem in no time.
It is not the easiest to use to navigate the main menu on the PS3, and some of the button on the PS3 controllers and remote are not present, primarily the PS button, so you cannot use the keyboard to turn on your PS3 system.
The touch pad works great, it is a little smaller then the average laptop touch pad, but it works well, and smooth. If you are used to using a laptop touch pad, you will have no problem picking it up and using this.
The keyboard, types well, its very responsive and makes typing anything a lot easier. I have used it while surfing the Internet on my PS3, as well in the PS3 chat program. it is very comfortable and great to use. I have experience with multiple laptop keyboards, and it is very similar to many laptop keyboards. I actually feel it has a better response then the 'average' desktop keyboard (average being the cheap keyboards that ship with most build desktops)
Overall, even had I paid full price for the keyboard, I would have been more then happy with the purchase. Having my experience with the used keyboard, and the discount through Amazon, it was the deal of the summer. I highly recommend shopping around, if money is tight, because there are millions of deals out there, that you can find like this.

(AP)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) – Eastman Kodak Co., the remade picture-taking pioneer, broke a series of four straight quarterly losses with a $443 million profit in the last three months of 2009 that sent its share price rocketing higher Thursday.
The earnings indicate Kodak, whose four-year makeover as a digital-photography heavyweight was sucker-punched in 2008 by the economic downturn, may be gathering momentum once again.
Its results in the October-December period were lifted by consumer and commercial inkjet printer sales, leaner costs and royalties on digital imaging inventions.
Its shares soared 91 cents, or 19.2 percent, to $5.68 in morning trading Thursday. They are trading in a 52-week range of $2.01 to $7.24.
Kodak earned the equivalent of $1.40 a share, in the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of $918 million, or $3.42 a share, a year earlier. Sales rose 6 percent to $2.58 billion from $2.43 billion.
Kodak said it earned $1.08 a share when one-time items are excluded, handily beating Wall Street forecasts. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected, on average, a much lower profit of 18 cents a share on lower sales of $2.38 billion.
Kodak drastically cut costs as it underwent a perilous transition from film to digital imaging from 2004 to 2007. Beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008, however, the global economic swoon sapped sales of both digital and film-based photography products.
"Despite a difficult economic environment, we delivered in 2009," said Chief Executive Antonio Perez. "Our momentum is returning and our strategy is paying off."
The 129-year-old Rochester-based company pared its payroll from 64,000 to 26,900 from 2004 to 2007. It eliminated another 4,100 jobs last year, shrinking its work force to a 1930s-era low of 20,300 from a 1988 peak of 145,300.
Digital sales rose 12 percent to $1.99 billion from $1.78 billion in the quarter, with operating profits jumping to $380 million from a $41 million loss a year earlier.
Traditional film-based revenue fell 10 percent to $589 million from $652 million. Helped by cost reductions and robust sales of movie film, operating profits in the segment rose 36 percent to $53 million.
Kodak said it achieved its target of doubling sales of consumer inkjet printers to more than 2 million in 2009, although that business isn’t expected to be profitable until 2011. The company estimates that consumer inkjet overall is a $50 billion market.
Its line of home printers, launched in 2007, produce high-quality photos using inexpensive ink cartridges. Priced about 15 percent higher than comparable printers, they’re targeted at consumers who print more pictures on average.
Kodak said its gross profit margin widened to 34.4 percent of sales from 20.4 percent a year earlier. About 6 percentage points of the increase was driven by productivity gains and higher demand for digital plates and thermal paper for retailers, plus productivity gains for digital cameras, consumer printers, electrophotographic printing and traditional photofinishing.
Another 8 points came from nonrecurring intellectual property licensing agreements.
After a yearlong legal tussle, Kodak negotiated royalty paying deals with Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. last month. It followed up in January by suing Apple Inc. and Research in Motion Ltd. over digital-camera technology in their iPhone and BlackBerry smart phones.
Kodak expects to generate, on average, $250 million to $350 million in annual intellectual property income from 2009 to 2011. It said it exceeded that range in 2009.
For all of 2009, Kodak lost $210 million, or 78 cents a share, compared with a loss of $442 million, or $1.57 in 2008. Sales fell 19 percent to $7.6 billion from $9.4 billion. Analysts were expecting a wider loss of $1.47 a share on $7.4 million in sales.

Sony Projektor bei Amazon bestellen
There are some film cameras that are worth your money, and then there are others that you should stay far away from. However, the difficult point in buying a film camera is understanding what makes a great camera, and what makes a terrible film camera. When you are searching for a new film camera, it is incredibly important that it has been outfitted with all of the latest features that will allow you to take breathtaking photographs every time you use it. The Nikon F6 35mm SLR Autofocus Film Camera is one of my personal favorite film cameras because it will provide you with professional-quality photographs, without having to spend months learning the various functions of the camera.
Product Ratings:
Product Features: 5/5 Stars
Image Quality: 5/5 Stars
User-Friendliness: 5/5 Stars
Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars
Main Product Features:
This Nikon film camera has been deemed as one of the greatest film cameras to ever hit the market. The reason for this is because of its unique features that will allow even the most inexperienced photographer to take breathtaking photographs.
The first feature that caught my attention within this film camera is the highly improved autofocus system. This autofocus system will provide you with a unique Sensor Module (Multi-CAM 2000 AF), which will allow you to focus on an object extremely fast and accurately. The precision of this autofocus is absolutely breathtaking, allowing you to enjoy an eleven-area autofocus sensor region. There are also various autofocus m odes you are able to choose from, which include Group Dynamic Autofocus, Closest Subject Priority and Focus Tracking.
Another great feature this film camera will provide its users is its ability to be fully customized. Actually, this film camera has some of the highest levels of customization I have ever seen in any camera. With a total of 41 Custom Settings, you will be able to personalize this film camera to your unique shooting styles. Because of this, it is easier to create and manipulate your photographs, allowing you to find your unique style.
The shutter sound of most film cameras is extremely loud. For most photographers this isn't a problem, however, if you photograph animals then you understand that a loud shutter sound can ultimately ruin a photograph. Because of this Nikon has introduced a new technology that controls the mechanics within the shutter motor, which silences all of the vibrations and other noises that are associated with shutter sounds.
Product Price:
You will be able to find this film camera from Nikon at nearly any photography retail store, as well as online for an average price of just over $1,000.

Accelerometers are devices that tell the camera which way up it was when you took a shot and allow auto-rotation of images.
When the camera can’t see the GPS satellites, which is nearly always, the camera uses the accelerometers to track your movements and mark the location based on the estimates.
The Casio Exilim EX-10HG hybrid GPS camera comes with integrated maps that can help photographers navigate as well. The Casio Exilim EX-10HG hybrid GPS camera comes with integrated maps that can help photographers navigate, by plotting locations on a map and even display direction to the spot.
Digital Camera Watch has reported that the Casio Exilim EX-10HG hybrid GPS camera can also display the distance from the current position to marked spots.
There is no information available as to when the camera will come to market.

Starring such voice talents as Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Harry Shearer, and Hank Azaria, Fox's The Simpsons is about the greatest TV cartoon family, and they're yours to own on DVD. Start your collection with the complete second season.
As creator Matt Groening said himself, the third season makes this one look like their first season. When compared to the more modern Simpsons art, the characters in this season are crude but the magic is still there. Packed with messages, the second season has more childish humor and less harsh adult cracks than you may be used to.
Be sure to enjoy episodes like “Treehouse of Horror”; part of a long-running series of episodes, this spooky episode includes three different stories, all told by Bart (Cartwright) and Lisa Simpson (Smith) that end up scaring Homer Simpson(Castellaneta). “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish” is about Homer's boss and Nuclear Power Plant owner, Montgomery Burns running for governor and finding out that his dishonest campaign can be exposed just as easily as his negligent supervision of safety in his power plant. For classic second season fun, there's always “Bart the Daredevil” in which the Simpson family go to a monster truck rally where Bart is dazzled by motorcycle daredevil, Lance Murdock, and tries to imitate him with his skateboard. ”Bart Gets Hit By a Car” is where Bart rides along on his skateboard and gets accidentally hit by Montgomery Burns, sending him to the hospital, and the Simpson family hires Lionel Hutz to take on the case. For wholesome Simpson fun, be sure to see “Bart's Dog Gets an F” in which Santa's Little Helper becomes too reckless and wild for the family to handle, and runs the risk of being taken away.
On the plus side, listen for such great celebrity guest voices as James Earl Jones as a narrator in “Treehouse of Horror”, Tony Bennett as himself and Tom Poston as the Capital City Goofball in “Dancin' Homer”, Harry Fierstein, Alex Rocco, Phil Hartman as classic character Lionel Hutz, Moses, Cable Guy, and the Barfly. Larry King plays himself, George Takei plays Akira, and Sab Shimono as the Master Chef in “One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish”. And last but not least, you can't miss the voice of Danny Devito as Herb Powell in ”Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”.
The Simpsons and their antics continue on in many more seasons to come, but season two is the first one you should buy to start off your Simpsons collection. What are you waiting for? What's stopping you from going to your local video retailer or going to Amazon.com to pick up your copy of this great season to one of TV's greatest shows?

I made some Pix in the last weeks – please tell me what they tell you:
Canon Objektiv bei Amazon kaufen Tell me if you like them – i love to discuss the photos with you!
When I first joined Associated Content, I couldn't wait to see my clout index increase. By employing the following techniques, I'm happy to report that my clout index catapulted from 1 to 4 in only two short weeks. It shot to 5 a couple of weeks after that.
If you just joined AC, hopefully these tips will do the same for you.
Create great titles…
…that are punchy and pithy. Make them interesting enough for readers to want to know more. You clicked on this article because it was something pertinent that you wanted to know more about, right?
If your headline doesn't lend itself to succinctness, at least make the first 3 or 4 words count. Depending on where your article's headline is eventually listed, like in AC's library page, the ending may be abbreviated due to space constraints. So the beginning may be the only portion of your title you have to entice readers to read on.
Walk the line between good taste and tabloid-tacky headlines, though. I originally titled one piece “My Night with Dave Chappelle,” knowing it would intrigue folks.
By the time it made it to press, the AC editors changed it to “My Night with Dave Chappelle on Tour,” which was really more appropriate. After all, the guy does have a wife and kids…
Also, make sure to check out the AC 101 page for other great articles that teach CPs how to write with search engine optimization and keyword density in mind.
Make subheads or the “Enter” key your friend.
Bolded section headers break up an article into readable chunks with good amounts of white space, and are more visually appealing. I don't know about you, but my eyes go loopy at pages and pages of unbroken text, unless it is something truly fascinating to read. If not, my mind says, “Forget it!”
With subheads, the reader can quickly scan over subjects the piece contains and pick out the sections they want to read, the fervent desire being all of them. A fully read and thoroughly enjoyed article is more likely to draw great comments, five-star votes, e-mail referrals and thus more page views.
Hit the links!
As you've already noticed, I've hyperlinked and referenced a few of my other articles in this piece, and made it easy for readers to read their descriptions and click on them.
Don't go crazy with links to the point where your whole article is baby blue, but at least capitalize on the attention one piece may get to promote your others.
Write amazing text.
Despite the temptation to throw together 10 so-so articles a day just to get paid more money right away, it's better to focus on one extremely well-written piece.
Composing high-quality content will bode better for you in the long run in terms of your writing career, especially if you're using your AC pieces to show editors who are hiring for freelance gigs. You only want your name to be associated with your best work, not pieces filled with grammatical and factual errors.
I spent days researching and writing the Dave Chappelle piece, much more than would seem warranted for only 10 bucks. Lo and behold, after bookmarking it to the high heavens (see more on bookmarking below), someone picked it up in the forum section of Dave Chappelle's official website and called it decent!
Decent! Woo hoo!
Days of blood, sweat and tears for a “decent” review! I took it, though, because I know if I would've thrown together some ad hoc crap, no one would have passed it around.
Soon thereafter – only two weeks after joining AC – I saw my clout index increase to four. The Chappelle piece even made the “Editor Picks” page on AC, along with the fast freebie mentioned next. (Non sequiturs be damned!)
Write a few fast freebies…
…that are topical and short, but still well-written and researched. The day before the controversial 13th season of ‘Survivor' premiered, I wrote a short piece called “Segregated ‘Survivor' – Island Life in Black and White (and Yellow and Red)” and selected the No Payment/Non Exclusive option.
(As an aside, why would anyone ever choose the No Payment/Exclusive option?)
Anyhoo, lickety split the ‘Survivor' piece was published, immediately after I clicked on the “save content” button. It was scary how fast that thing was published, but thank the good Lord that I had proofed it thoroughly.
It's the same technique I used for “Why You Should Watch Grey's Anatomy's Season 3 Premiere,” which landed in the second position of Google News' search results for “Grey's Anatomy” and quickly helped to bump my clout index up to 5.
Bookmark your pieces to death.
As soon as you get that “You've been published!” email in your inbox, click on as many of the bookmarking sites listed beneath your article (and more) that your sleepy eyes will let you muster, letting the cyberworld know it's out there to behold.
I always like to add the url of my most recent piece to Google, a site that performs “fresh crawls” at interval timings that they don't disclose. But it must be pretty often, because the same day that I added my ‘Survivor' piece to the fray, a sociology student found it pretty high up in Google News' search results.
Play tag!
Even before you get published, whilst still in the seemingly lllooooonnnnngggg waiting-to-be published phase, go to the “My Content” tab, click on “e” to edit your piece, and click on the “e” to edit the photo you've attached.
Do this after you've found and attached a legal, spankin' good image from some site like Google Images, Free Stock Photos, Geek Philosopher, Big Foto, First Gov, stock.xchng, Big Stock Photo or Getty Images and added a witty caption.
There's a “keywords” spot there that allows you to enter terms that folks searching for images might stumble across, and therefore find your lovely article along with it.
Enter as many keywords or “tags” that are applicable and allowed when tagging both your images on AC and your articles when bookmarking them at other sites.
Some places only allow 3 to 5 tags, while others allow as many as possible. Make all your tags count, and make them topical.
For example, the tags for my “Top Ten Songs by James Blunt” piece were:
2006, baby, back to bedlam, blount, blunt, blunted, chasing time, Christian, Concert, death, girlfriend, High, james blunt, james blunt live, jimmy, marriage, military, new cd, petra, Nemcova, model, thin, laxatives, sex, tears and rain, tickets, Tour, wife, world tour, you're beautiful
I entered these tags (where allowed on both the images and bookmarking sites) because I knew folks would be searching for James Blunt's most recent touring info. Which reminds me, another great way to check what people are looking for is to…
…check the hot searches.
Find out exactly how to write your tags (and get inspiration for new articles) by checking out the sites that track what people are looking for.
Bookmark Yahoo Buzz and check it often to see exactly what search phrases folks are typing in quotes, then use those phrases as your tags, where appropriate.
Technorati also has a top searches and top tags list developed by tracking millions of blogs. And then there are the AOL Hot Searches, where you can click on the “more” arrow to see the top 20 hottest searches, and their change from the previous day.
Lastly, there's dogpile and metaspy , a couple of sites that I don't use all that often, but they do show you in real time the truly varied (and sometimes weirdly horrifying) stuff people are searching for. It might be worth a try to keep dogpile open in a small window as it scrolls and check for consistent themes on any given day.
Examine your search ranking and find the right forums…
…where users are most likely to comment on your piece. As soon as a news story related to a piece you've published hits the front page of AOL or Yahoo or any other prominent news provider's page, leave a comment (if they offer a section to leave comments) that directs web-heads to your published piece.
Set up Google alerts to check for your byline (and/or article titles if your byline is a super-common name), so that you'll get emails alerting you when your search ranking rises.
For example, I set up as-it-happens alerts on “Paula Neal Mooney” so that I could tell how effective it was to seed my stories on the sites listed beneath my published articles in AC.
This is how I found out that the Dave Chappelle piece had been mentioned in his site's forum. It helps to know what's worked in the past, so that you can duplicate your marketing efforts (which you should spend as much time on as writing) in the future.
Use your AC profile to market your articles.
Personally, I tend to be more intrigued by (and therefore more apt to click on) profiles that contain the writer's photo, but I understand the many reasons why some folks don't want to put their faces out there.
Photo or not, you can use your AC profile page to market your work efficiently. Use all three Affiliation URL spots to lead people somewhere, either to your blog, online business, or other articles. My third affiliation says “Celebrity Stuff,” and users who click on it are led straight to my latest published AC article about a celeb.
I even use the “Interests” field to list the exact title of my favorite article of the moment, so that when users click on it, they are taken to AC's search page, with my piece near or at the top. It's just one more prominent spot to place your articles' headlines for those who don't scroll all the way down your CP page.
Write from your gut.
This is really the numero uno tip on creating content that people want to read. If you're passionate about a subject, it will translate on the screen. Sometimes I write from AC's suggested topics, yet other times I go in a completely different direction and pour out the piece that's nagging at my insides.
Like this puppy that you're reading now, which made my fingers fly across the keyboards, amazing me over 1,600 words later.
I find that my writing flows better when I'm heeding my “Holy Ghost-writer,” and I'm more apt to do intensive (okay, obsessive!) research about the kinds of things that interest me the most. Joseph Campbell wasn't lying when he said to follow your bliss. I say follow it all the way to the bank!
Write to suit the AC editors.
Make everyone's life easier by creating error-free content that editors don't have to spend much time correcting.
I also notice that the AC folks tend to favor paying for service pieces like “Ten Legitimate Ways for Stay-at-Home Moms to Make Their Own Money,” “You Cheated – Should You Confess?” and “40 Things to Do Before You Turn 40″ as opposed to self-aggrandizing stuff.
For example, my Cleveland/Akron Family magazine reprint, “Are Smart Stay-at-Home Moms Wasting Their Brains?” was deemed one of the rejected “op-ed pieces on well covered or general topics” with “too short of a shelf-life” by AC, so I published it for free just to get the page views.
Ironically, it ended up as a “Editor Picks” selection on AC's home page for days.
Get on the front page of AC…
…by not only writing the kind of compelling text that will land you there, but by emailing “an image of yourself that is at least 300 pixels wide to admin@associatedcontent.com,” which, according to AC's blog, will give you “a strong chance of being featured on our front page.”
Oh, those CMs are loving me right about now…but to redeem myself for filling up their email box with put-me-on-the-front-page-please pix is the last tip to…
…pitch your piece and move on.
Yes, you've spent days and days writing your brilliant baby, and you can't wait for it to be published. Literally.
In your impatience, you shoot off an annoying email (I'm embarrassed to say I know this from firsthand knowledge) containing the text of your piece to AC's admin, hoping to move your article to the front of the hopper.
Calm down. Instead, go watch some TV, take a walk, or talk to your friends. Eventually, those swamped CMs with get back to you with the exciting “Offer from Associated Content,” or the let-em-down gently, empathetically titled “Reply from Associated Content.”
In the meantime, doing other stuff will provide you with the inspiration to get that next article written and in the hopper – one so fascinating that folks will click on it and send your clout index into the stratosphere!
